We are now making traditional hot process tallow soap from grass fed cattle from neighbouring family farms. This fat resource has been put out for the coyotes because our neighbours couldn’t interest anyone in its value as food or soap. That has shifted and its value is being seen.
The whole process is small batch. We render the beef fat in a 20 L pot on the wood stove. This melts the fat and cooks the non-fat membrane off. This takes about 36 hours. We filter the tallow into recycled large glass jars.
We’re make our 4 ounce bars ( 1x2x4 inches ). The hot process cooking means getting the fats to 211 degrees F in a crock pot adding the chemically hot lye water and simmering and stirring it until it gels, about 45 minutes … one crock pot holds enough for 9 bars of finished soap … small batches. Basic ingredients: the tallow, the lye and healthy well water.
The smell of the fresh soap is sweet, like milk fudge and new babies … an aroma that speaks to an ancient part of your deep ancestral memory that you didn’t know was there.
FAT Tallow Soap $10.00 per bar which are available for pickup at our farm … or we can mail. This is a hard soap that we’re finding it lasts longer than what we were using previously which was a vegetable soap … just keep your soap high and dry between usage … a good soap dish : )
